Akanne Torres Beltran is a 6th year Ph.D. candidate in Sociology with a Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Demography. Her research examines family dynamics, siblings, social inequalities, education, and migration. Akanne's dissertation work is currently recognizing the histories and social mobility pathways of Mexican-origin immigrant families in Central Florida through a multi family member approach. This work will provide insights into how emerging immigrant communities establish a foothold in a rural environment to support upward mobility across and within generations. In particular, she places close attention to the gender dynamics and roles that may support or hinder such processes. Akanne plans to use her experience and research to tailor services and resources from local nonprofits and community centers to better meet the needs of their immigrant populations. Akanne was recently awarded and named as an American Dissertation Fellowship 2026-27 from the American Association of University Women.
